For all you Bartitsu, walking stick fighting, la canne, canefighting martial arts, and victorian self-defense fans out there at. ‎@DanOldSkoolConditioningMan . It’s time for us to take another step along our strength and fighting fitness journey. Looking at Edward William Barton-Wrights New Art of Self Defence, that was Bartitsu, the first mixed martial art of the modern era.
In this episode, we are delving deeper into La Canne, the French stick fighting martial art, one of the four main constituent fighting systems, and martial arts that made up Bartitsu.
So, having already learned the basic striking techniques of the la canne self-defense system of Professor Joseph Charlemont, using his 1905 manual. We now start to put these strikes into various offensive drills, combining a different cane fighting technique and targeting a different part of the body of an assailant within each drill, giving us a series of set peice drill we can train to make us better at defending ourselves with the walking cane, just as the late victorian and early edwardian bartitsu practioner would have done.
This video, the first in its series, will show you how the walking stick of the victorian gentleman was a formidable weapon for self-defense.
In this episode, we will be showing you how armed with a stout walking stick the victorian gentleman would be able to control all ranges of fighting space. This drill will start of at long range with a cut to either head body or leg, then stepping in to deliver a second strike a head cut this time into medium range, then delivering a low point thrust with the cane to the solar plexus and then final delivering our fourth and final cane strike a bayonet strike th the face. We have now moved through long, medium, and short ranges, delivering four strikes and taking only three steps.
An amazingly effective and fairly simple self-defense drill that will take even the biggest opponant.
Also, as part of our study of Bartitsu we are not only trying to recreate what it would have been like to learn it in its original form but also as functional strength and physical fitness training. As Charlemont states that studying and regular practice of his lacane and savate systems are not only fro self defence but are also excellent for physical fitness and dexterity of the limbs. As I have found out that just training in these various fighting systems is hard work on the muscles of the body. Also, strength and fitness training in this manner requires no gym memberships, no class fees and very little if any expensive exercise equipment. So if like me you love history, delving into Old fighting systems and forms of physical exercise not practiced today. Why not come and join my unconventional strength and fitness training lifestyle training with the victorians.

Practical techniques, except — if the attacker is already close enough for the stick, how do you get to the first position, with the stick around the back of your neck, before the attacker closes on you, jams your raised arm and stops you from executing it?
