When I was a kid way back in 1980s I started martial arts, and I loved hand weapons training, because, lol, it was cool, and impressive, but I was a kid, and couldn't afford the bo staffs, or nunchuka, or wooden swords for practice, so I took every local wood in my area," Ocala Florida" ,and started experimenting different strengths of local woods, pine Wood sucked, it would snap, oak wood and hickory would splinter, but I cut a piece of a persimmon spalling, and I don't know why, but I stuck it into a peat bog at my mom's pond and left it there for a few months, while I was at school, and summer break came up, and I pulled it from the peat bog and dried it out naturally, and carved it into the shape of a wooden samurai sword, dude that thing was so tough, it was flexible, and oily from the natural resin in the wood. And I use canpher wood for my knife handles, it's an invasive tree here in Florida, and it is stone hard, and doesn't warp. It's hard too work, but has a super great grain.oh and the persimmon wooden sword I made, smashed concrete blocks, not the baked ones that they use for demonstration, but the real construction grade concrete blocks, give it a try, you will be impressed.
