My house was built in 1886. While I was cleaning out decades of accumulated stuff I found an old looking percussion black powder rifle. I thought it was just a replica and let the kids play with it. They whacked it on trees, put it in the dirt, and left it out in the rain for about 5 years. I learned that a friend does restoration of old guns and he asked to look at this gun. Turns out it is authentic 1820-1830 era Kentucky Long Rifle in 36 caliber smooth bore. So I am having him restore it. I decided to make a patch knife to go with it. The patch knife is what the original user would have had to cut patches out of fabric for seating the ball on top of the powder charge.
