Knife Defense Awareness Sensitivity Drill #1 in Bagua Kuntao Silat Karambit Knife Fighting
This video demonstrates and provides instruction with knife defense and awareness with the first sensitivity drill used to help learn self defense with the knife. This drill should only be practiced during the Next Level Basic of practice after the student has learned the first two sections of the 64 Palms Form, at the next level, at least and also after having understood maintenance of the groundpath while moving through silk reeling practice and having practiced Qiao Shou, or Bridge Hands, at least to Level #3 before practicing this drill.
The reason for waiting is so that proper structure is continually maintained as well as moving from the center or the sensitivity and awareness will not allow the practitioner to move properly for defense, and only unskilled flailing or evasion will be the result. The cultivation of keeping the proper structure while moving in and evading with stepping while using palm transitions as the attacker attempts to stab and cut you, the defender, is the goal. Start slow and easy but maintain fluidity and constant motion. Acknowledge the cuts and keep going. Make it fun and play with it!
In future drills, more advanced footwork, traps, sweeps and throws are incorporated and the sensitivity drill becomes more like sparring or fighting and self defense over the course of time. Additionally, both hands are used to attack and defend in later, more advanced drills. The Bagua Kuntao Silat practitioner learns to become extremely aware of the potential of the knife or blade while experiencing for him or herself what works and how the knife can be used and defended against.
Bagua Kuntao Silat is kung fu that works!
