Pretty cool to see Jim on YouTube, after sharing the Warrant Officer Entry Course in 1985. He was unforgettable way back then!

Jim, Awesome to see and know you are still around. I met you probably going on 25+ years ago working a door at a bar in Richmond (PP). I enjoyed our conversations. At the house I still have the VHS tapes (lethal tactics) you honestly asked for feedback from someone like me before you released them. You’re a beast and I’m glad to know you’re still kicking.

I have a general problem with your content because it is speaking to someone who has the time to spend hours each week to training. You have spent your life invested in training/using martial arts either through the military or working in the industry. The average person has never been in a fight for his life and neither has the time or willingness to devote significant time to training. Nevertheless, they are interested in a down and dirty basic understanding of what it takes to survive a violent conflict and you have the ability to address that need. You talk about fighting with a certain glee that would be foreign to everyone in my world. We don't hang around bars, drink too much, interact with strangers who wear their ego on their shirt sleeve. Although I personally began training in Shotokan in 1967, competed in point karate, kendo, have a decade in Kali – my life has never allowed me the time to master the disciplines you discuss, although I fully understand the concepts you discuss. My one day a week training in Kali, over the last decade, has given me a certain amount of knife and empty hand proficiency, but it is highly unlikely that it will every come to use. I think what you can best do is to explain the mental software it takes to fight and survive and give a neophyte the basic techniques of striking and target selection and suggestions for lawful force multipliers. Teach a nerd to handle a knife and it is unlikely any tough guy will ever ruin his day. I could slice and dice a small crowd before they realized what happened. At 75, it's all I need.

The Brother at the end brought up some really good social climate points regarding modern day police work. And I've witnessed what he was referring to, first hand, on multiple occasions. It is especially a problem here in the People's Republic of the SF/Oakland Bay area where crime is completely out of hand, lawlessness, and the progressive policies that emboldened these criminals is only getting worse by the day

You can develop a dangerous rep by telling stories. Most people just don't know fact from fiction and don't want to find out. I knew tough guys growing up and most went to prison , most of them weren't white guys . If you have a willingness to want to hurt someone, it goes a long way. You can learn all this in the gym from an instructor that dictates techniques, butt never been in a serious fight . I had a bad reputation because I trained alot. I had friends that were afraid of me just because I was training. But then I got tested and it didn't really work out in my favor. It's not a good feeling when you see the look on your people's faces after you get humiliated and your reputation turned into bullshit. Learn basic technique, know targets , be willing to inflict serious injuries to someone, be in shape. Because once the"real" fight is on, instinct takes over, then it's primal

What you discused at the end is a huge problem in many cities now. It is important to have individuals in certain jobs not second guess themselves when they do dangerous work. The world is accepting chaos so nothing is going to get better. The criminal element is just finding more and more ways around many laws.

I got a chance to train with Smokey (George Clarke was there also) 2 years ago at a seminar Jim Hartley was hosting. Most functional training I've ever worked with. These guys are the real deal and I'm training with their methods
