Learn self defense:

Many self defense instructors mention that if you find yourself in a knife fight is to “Expect to get cut”. Yes, theoretically it kind of makes sense to mention that, but it’s still not the best mindset to have going into a knife fight.

In fact, you should avoid getting cut as much as possible, seeing as that can lead to you struggling to defend yourself afterwards.

What the conditions actually mean is that if you do get cut, don’t panic. Just because you’re bleeding doesn’t mean you will die; it means you are alive and still have to do your best and fight to survive until the very end, while never giving up.

Having said that, this video is about knife defense stances and psychology. There are many different stances that you can do while defending yourself against an opponent carrying a knife.

However, it’s best if you find one you’re at ease with, and that comes naturally. If you start off by being stiff and uncomfortable, it won’t help you in defending yourself in the long run.

Also, you need to remain as calm as can be. Yes, it can be scary. However, if you allow your fear and panic to take control of your mind, you will not last long in a knife fight. The key is to think fast and clearly about your next move.

You run! Unless you're fighting for your life like caught in surprise or you have no choice to protect a love one or you're cornered then run.

A little over 4 years ago and some months, i was living in San Diego, CA where this kind of assault takes place and unexpectedly…i saw this video. It helped me understand the mechanics of stances in a knife combat situation, i was in involved in a blade conflict with out thinking of a stance because this unexpected attack took me hard. ..i had always carried a medium sized combat knofe in the sleeve of my jacket and i had a feeling about this jerk. It was how he soft stepped his walk. I know that style so i prepared but was not prepared. Any ways, he got poked in back of his calves..i ham strung him when i dropped from his crazed ass attack. All this was due to watching your video.

Natural instinct reaction is more of an open type, exposing wrist, centerline and heart-neck area. We need to educate ourself in preventing this type of natural reaction.
    Thanks Nick for tis video….

Good tips! That first stance looked really awkward, and they would probably take it as a threat

Well said as always and I agree completely, especially about natural instinct taking over in your motions. Many thanks.
