Krav Maga – How to defend against a knife attack using krav maga techniques KarambitKnives, com
Krav maga has been used for years because it is effective, not in minutes but rather in seconds. It is the best hand to hand combat available for you to aggressively deal with any self defense situation you may find yourself in. This is especially true when being attacked with a weapon such as a knife.
Before we go give you a description of what is in the “Krav maga Knife attack defense techniques” let’s quickly discuss the 3 main principles of krav maga. No matter the self defense technique you execute, these krav principles are at the core of your defense. Let’s list each principle and discuss how they are relevant to each krav maga self defense move in our video clips:
1. Deal with the immediate threat. With a knife attack, the obvious threat is you being cut or stab. So you deal with this threat by keeping the knife away from you, in other words, blocking the arm attacking you with the knife. In krav maga, we use a concept for blocking called the 360 block. It is an imaginary 360 degree circle that you form in front of you to protect your body and beginning with the top of your head and ending with protection of your groin area. Also, since we are in the topic of 360 blocks, the effectiveness of any of the 360 blocks begins with the position of your hand. No matter which block you are doing, proper hand positioning is a MUST. For krav maga 360 blocks, proper hand position basically means placing the hand from the arm you are blocking with in a “Karate chop” position. Your fingers are together from index to pinky to support each other. Your thumb should be tucked in to the point where you feel your hand tighten up. Believe it or not, your defenses are a lot faster when your hand is in a karate chop position than when your hands are in bawled up in a fist. It also gives you a larger margin of error and it is especially important if you miss the wrist block and instead block with your hand and or fingers. The other thing that an open hand/karate chop block provides you is a quick ability to tie up the person’s wrist after the block. If you have your hand in a fist you will have to open your hand and then get a hold of the person. Whereas if your hand is in its proper karate chop form all you have to do is close your had and the point of strike.
In our video clips you will see the top and bottom blocks. The first video clip will show you how to block the knife attack coming at you from the top as well as the bottom.
2. Counter attack – Next, you have to attack fast and aggressively. The rule here is that there are no rules. You look for a target and attack. And, one target that is most often available to you is the groin area. And, since in a knife attack you are will be in close quarter, the knee strike is one of the more popular counter attacks taught in krav maga. From there your assailant will more than likely open up other target areas like his face (when he bends over) which will be primed for an elbow attack.
In our video clips we don’t go into the krav maga counter attacks, but we annotate the first one where you can possibly use a knee strike. Knee strikes are taught especially in women krav maga classes as well as kids krav maga lessons.
3. Get away – Now that you have the advantage it is time to get away. You don’t want to become the bad guy by now pummeling the person. And if fact, I have heard of a lawsuit filed by an assailant because the person being attacked had neutralized him and then became the attacker. This is more of a discipline in krav maga and it is especially useful in teaching children krav maga.
By the way, our second video clip is made available to you courtesy of famed Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Gracie family. If you are not familiar with who the Gracie’s are, they are considered royalty not only in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but also in the world of mix martial arts or MMA. The video clip shows a very effective krav maga technique to dealing with an underhand knife attack.
