Vladimir Zatsiorsky, who is the former strength and conditioning consultant to the former Soviet Union’s Olympic Teams, and who has helped trained hundreds of Olympic and world-class athletes, classifies strength exercises into 3 phases: concentric, isometric, and eccentric. The vast majority of weightlifters, powerlifters, and home gym owners only focus on the concentric phase, which is when the muscles shorten to overcome the resistance. You can increase your strength gains by modifying your strength exercises to include training all three phases of strength.
