I used an old flat blade cold chisel to make the knife. Since the the chisel was already heat treated to the correct hardness, I did not have to do that. I was very careful to keep the blade from overheating while shaping it.
It took about 10 hours to make the knife, spread out over three days. It took roughly 30 hours to make the video, spread out over seven days.

I mainly used just three tools to make this: an angle grinder, a belt sander and a disk sander. On the grinder I used a thin zipcut blade to do the cutting, a regular grinding wheel to do the bulk of the shaping, and a flap sander wheel for the fine shaping on the handle.
Yes, the grinder does not have a guard – yours should. Work safe but don’t let the fear of injury keep you from trying something.
After watching this, it should be clear that I have had a LOT of practice doing this, and I urge you not to get discouraged if your results are not as pretty. Mine weren’t either, when I first started.

The micarta is homemade, and I show how I made that here:

After all of the final sanding was done, I coated the handle and blade with regular machine oil (3 in 1 oil). Oil makes the handle that dark, rich colour but keeps it feeling natural.

Originally, I wanted steel pins through the guard, but I could not drill through the blade (way too hard). Yes, I used oil, yes I used a premium quality drill bit, no it would not go. Instead, I roughed up the blade where the guard is and used epoxy to glue it in place. I don’t think it will ever come loose during normal use of the knife. If it does, I can glue it back on – I made it, I surely can fix it.

The wooden templates were just hand made by me to get the right shape for the blade and length for the handle.

The best way to keep a knife that’s made from high carbon steel from rusting is to use it often, clean it and oil it.
