Machetes proper were probably invented by the Spanish in Central America, in the 15th or 16th centuries, for clearing brush . they had swords for fighting, but a long sword is no good for clearing brush. Now every culture has a long knife used as both a tool and weapon. Machetes are very light, for cutting brush. some knives such as Philippine bolos and African pangas, are much heaver, better for cutting wood (and bone)
