Personally I don't know why anyone would put anything green (never mind just pine) or wet stuff on a fire. Ive always been taught this and always to see if the wood snaps or just bends. Another good indicator. Do not put bendy sticks on fire, they don't burn. They are still full of sap ūüôā

YOU MISED PART OF THE STORY  JJ GREEN PINE DOES HAVE A PLACE IN THE FIRE ARENA      YOU PUT IT ON AN ALLREADY ESTABLISHED FIRE AND IT PRODUCES A HUGE PLUME OF WHITE SMOKE   THIS IS GOOD TO KNOW IF YOUR LOST OR HURT AND WANT TO GET ATTENTION OF RESCUE PARTY OR  A PASSING PLANE OR HOLIO

Again you have misunderstood what was said, but in your defense I must not have explained myself clearly enough to convey the CONTEXT of what I wrote I never questioned weather or not you have built a signal fire but used that as an example of how something can be taken out of context thanks for proving my point.

  7. sammichai805 says:

I feel that you have misunderstood exactly what was said in the video in the same way that you you said never use green wood on you fire, if I don't use green pine boughs how can I make huge cloud of white smoke for signaling??

I dig Canterbury's vids & i have picked up loads of tips & advice from them, but i have to agree green pine is best avoided when doing fires, I watched the original video and saw it as a hasty attempt to show it was possible to light a fire in adverse conditions quickly & figured Dave just grabbed what was to hand. Soon as the pine hit the fire, you saw the smoke
(which is mostly water content burning off).
JJ your video & the point it makes is totally valid & well worth being aware of.

  9. Justin George says:

Oh man the Canterbury cult going to be on your ass. I dnt think he said use live pine to start the fire but to put it on a decent flame to make a sure fire. I like Dave's videos but I agree with ya. No disrespect to either of ya sometimes ppl are goin to disagree. To each is his own

  10. lonwlf68 says:

I have nothing but respect for Dave, and love all his videos, but I was kind of surprised that he didn't have fule on hand to feed the fire once he got it started..that's kind of an important rule of fire building..always have fuel at hand and ready to add to the fire!

  11. CopingWithTheTimes says:

He didn't say use green pine bows to start a fire. Green pine needles and even the branches are extremely flammable due to the gaseous oil they expire. I think you are doing a terrible disservice to your viewers by telling them "Never use green wood on a fire" when you are supposed to be offering "survival" advice. I find it laughable that anyone with a North Face jacket and a Maxpedition bag is suddenly a survival expert. What a joke. Unsubbed!
