For the 1% of people who actually want to become practitioners of the martial arts, it's good to set realistic boundaries, and practice within those boundaries, testing them for efficacy.

I studied martial arts for years, and now that I'm older with bad knees and elbows, the last thing I want to do is get into any sort of fight. Wing Chung has a great front kick to the hip of your opponent. It causes no damage, but stops them from getting too close. That's when you draw your CHL gun and shoot.

Perfect technique will only come about when you control all the variables. For example, kata and scripted techniques where both participants know that one will attack in a specific way and the other will defend in a specific way.

As I tell my students, all you want is for your techniques to be efficient enough to be effective.
